KOGANJI BUDDHIST TEMPLE CALLED TOGENUKI JIZO

This temple was originally constructed by Mr. Tasuke FUCHIGAKU in KANDA-YUSHIMA in1596
and moved to the present place in 1891. Afterwards it was burnt down by American air bombing
in 1945 and reconstructed in 1957.
It is located about 5 minute walk from SUGAMO station of JR Yamanote loop line and believed
that the temple has a great power to cure sickness based on some stories of Edo period and
many aged people, above all, many aged women visit there.
As a result, this place around the temple is called "HARAJUKU for aged ladies", meanwhile
HARAJUKU is one of fashion centers near Meiji Jingu Shrine for younger generations.

This Bodhisattva is called "ARAI JIZO".
If one washes or wipes the part of the statue
corresponding to that of his or her sickness
with water or a wet towel, his or her sickness
could be cured, they belive.
Visitors purify themselves with water before entering
sanctuary.
People believe that the smoke of incense
has special power to cure sickness.
Some street vender's stalls and
paper lanterns near the temple.
Many shops at the both sides of the approach.
