1, Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo arena

The arena was constructed in 1984 and accommodates 11,098 spectators on its floor space
of 35,700 square meters. It is 39.6 meters high and 2 minutes on foot from Ryogoku station.
Grand Sumo tournament is held six (6) times each year in Japan and three (3) times in January,
June and September at this arena.

RYOGOKU area boosts Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo arena and Edo-Tokyo municipal museum
near JR RYGOKU station of SOBU line. During Edo period many historical figures lived in this area.
Some of them were KIRA Kozukenosuke very famous in Chushingura story, KOBAYASHI Issa,
one of the greatest poets, KATSU Kaishu, one of the great leaders in 19th century, etc.
We get to RYOGOKU in four (4) minutes by train after changing JR Yamanote line to SOBU line
at AKIHABARA station or taking OEDO municipal subway line.

and a SUMO museum at right.

The museum opened on 28 March,1993 and displays the history and culture of Tokyo
with big models, real things, photos, pictures, etc.
It is located just behind Sumo arena and three (3) minutes on foot from Ryogoku station
and its building is 62 meters high. However it is being closed until 2025 due to
rehabilitaion works of the building.
